Relative Clauses Speaking – Odd One Out Discussion Task

This relative clauses speaking activity gets learners engaged in meaningful conversation while reviewing grammar structures in context. Students examine sets of four words or phrases and discuss which one is the odd one out — and why. To justify their choices, they must use relative clauses (e.g., It’s a tool that…) and modals of probability (e.g., It might be…, It can’t be…), combining fluency with targeted grammar practice.

Focus on Grammar and Fluency

Students don’t just guess the odd one out — they’re encouraged to explain their reasoning in full sentences, using both relative clauses and modals of probability. This allows them to:

  • Practise defining relative clauses in natural conversation

  • Use modal verbs for speculation and logical deduction

  • Build confidence expressing nuanced ideas aloud

This makes the activity an ideal extension or follow-up to grammar lessons on relative clauses or modals of deduction.

This lesson comes with:

Fillable Fields – This worksheet can be completed digitally or printed.

Teacher’s Copy – Includes detailed teacher’s notes and an answer key.

This is most suited to B1/B2- level.

30 minutes + (depending on level).

Why Use This Relative Clauses Speaking Activity?

This task promotes interaction, critical thinking, and relative clauses practice in a way that feels like a game rather than a test. It’s perfect for pair or small group work and can be adapted for warmer activities or wrap-up discussions.
