Students research their assigned topics individually but work together in pairs or small groups to share and discuss their findings. They learn about Spain’s Three Kings, Australian summer celebrations, Iceland’s Yule Lads, Polish Christmas Eve customs, Japanese Christmas food traditions, and more. This flexible Christmas research activity ESL works beautifully as a standalone lesson or as part of a wider cultural theme.
If your students do not have access to the internet, or if you prefer a lower-tech option, the lesson also includes cut-up description cards in the answer section (pp. 2–3) that you can distribute instead. Students read, paraphrase, and present the information to their group — perfect for developing speaking and summarising skills.
After completing their research, learners report back to their group, compare cultural differences, and reflect on unusual or surprising customs. This activity offers a great opportunity for Christmas traditions around the world ESL discussion while supporting paraphrasing, speaking fluency, and vocabulary development.
