The Night before Christmas

3.45

Level: This is suited to C1 level students, but could be used with B2 level students with extra support or as revision at C2 level.

Time: 1.5 hrs + (depending on level).

This lesson plan is based on the poem ‘The Night before Christmas’. The lesson begins with a brief introduction to the poem. Next, the students read the poem and try to complete the missing words using the rhyming scheme to help them. Then, there is lots of focus on advanced vocabulary contained in the poem through an image-matching exercise and a synonym search.

In the next part of the lesson, the students listen to a recording of the poem being read aloud and must complete the gaps with vocabulary they have learnt. Then, the students work in pairs or small groups, using the questions provided to discuss aspects of the poem. Lastly, they have the opportunity to write their own rhyming sentences about Christmas.

There is also an additional vocabulary revision exercise which can be set for homework or given to fast finishers.

We have a teacher’s copy (including teacher’s notes, a pronunciation guide and an answer key) and a student version which you can email to your class for online lessons.
