Engage your students with this vibrant, ready-to-use Chinese New Year ESL lesson designed for upper-intermediate to advanced learners. This comprehensive ESL Chinese New Year English lesson combines language development with cultural exploration, making it ideal for teen and adult classes.

This lesson helps students build confidence across all four skills while learning about Chinese New Year / Lunar New Year traditions, symbols, and celebrations around the world. It works well as a stand-alone cultural lesson or as part of a wider thematic unit.

The lesson includes a range of interactive activities to encourage communication and critical thinking, including:

  • Warm-up discussion activities to introduce the topic and activate background knowledge

  • Vocabulary practice with image–definition matching and gap-fill tasks (ideal as an ESL Chinese New Year worksheet)

  • Reading comprehension focusing on Chinese New Year traditions and zodiac animals

  • Listening practice exploring New Year parades and the Lantern Festival

  • Task-based speaking and project work, where students research and present on global festivals using functional language for describing events

This ESL Chinese New Year lesson can be taught over one extended lesson or split across two classes. Optional follow-up and homework tasks allow for further practice and consolidation.

This is a fantastic website and the worksheets scaffold the teaching points very well. But there are two things that I find to be a small irritant. When I put in a specific search e.g. second conditional - it includes worksheets not related to that search. The other thing is that I am a paid subscriber but often a pop up box appears asking me to review the free resources. I have to keep closing the pop up box which is annoying.
