This education vocabulary lesson helps A1/A2− teens and adults learn and practise useful language related to school and education. Through a range of engaging activities, learners practise school vocabulary and school subjects while developing their reading, pronunciation, speaking and writing skills.

Education Vocabulary ESL Lesson Overview

1. School Subjects

Students begin by matching images to common school subjects before discussing the subjects they like and dislike and brainstorming additional subjects.

2. Education Vocabulary

Students build an education vocabulary word bank by sorting useful words into actions/verbs, people, places and adjectives. These education vocabulary exercises introduce and consolidate language including principal, pupil, classroom, canteen, schoolyard, strict, patient, study and teach.

3. Reading Comprehension

Students complete a short text about a student’s school experience using the target vocabulary, answer true or false questions and discuss comprehension questions in pairs.

4. Pronunciation

Students practise the number of syllables and word stress in key vocabulary. British and American phonetic transcriptions are provided as a pronunciation guide.

5. Speaking Practice

Students ask and answer questions about their own school experiences, using present or past forms as appropriate.

6. Vocabulary Race

Teams race to complete school and education vocabulary from definitions, providing a fun review of language from the lesson.

7. Writing

Students finish by writing a short text about their own school experience, using the reading text as a model.
