Final S Pronunciation Exercises – Lesson Overview
The lesson explains the s es pronunciation rules and provides structured practice with the pronunciation of s endings. Students work with the three sounds in different contexts, including the pronunciation of plural s, third-person singular verbs and possessive ‘s.
1. Pronunciation Rules and Sound Awareness
Students compare the endings in three example sentences before exploring the rules for /s/, /z/ and /ɪz/. A clear reference table explains how the final sound of a word determines the pronunciation of its ending, with examples and guidance on voiced and voiceless sounds.
2. Word Sorting and Listening Practice
Students sort 12 words into the three pronunciation categories, then listen to the audio to check their answers and repeat the words. This activity provides focused practice with final -s and -es endings.
3. Odd One Out
In four groups of words, students identify the word with a different final -s sound. The activity encourages careful listening and helps students distinguish between /s/, /z/ and /ɪz/.
4. Illustrated Vocabulary Activity
Students match eight illustrated vocabulary items to the correct words, preparing them for the final speaking activity.
5. The Three-Sound Sentence Challenge
These s z iz pronunciation exercises conclude with a creative speaking challenge. Students choose people and words from three sound categories to make unusual or funny sentences containing all three endings. They then read their sentences aloud to a partner, focusing on accurate pronunciation.
