‘Would rather’ Speaking Activity

These free Would You Rather ESL Questions for adults and teens give students an engaging way to practise would rather, express preferences and develop their speaking skills. It contains 20 entertaining and thought-provoking prompts for pairwork or small-group discussion.

Level: B1–B2−

Student Version – A printable pairwork handout that can also be cut into would you rather speaking cards.

Would You Rather ESL Questions Overview

1. Review Would Rather

Teachers can briefly review the meaning and form of would rather + base verb. Students are also shown how to answer using the contracted form, such as I’d rather live in the countryside because it’s quieter.

2. Student A and Student B Pairwork

Students work in pairs and take turns asking their questions. They choose an option, explain their reasons and ask follow-up questions. Teachers can cut the page down the middle for pairwork or cut up the individual questions for use as speaking cards.

3. Feedback and Error Correction

Teachers monitor the discussions and note any language errors. After the activity, students identify and correct selected errors as a class.

Lesson Objectives

This is a fantastic website and the worksheets scaffold the teaching points very well. But there are two things that I find to be a small irritant. When I put in a specific search e.g. second conditional - it includes worksheets not related to that search. The other thing is that I am a paid subscriber but often a pop up box appears asking me to review the free resources. I have to keep closing the pop up box which is annoying.
