Through realistic listening and reading dialogues, students practise introducing themselves, asking questions, making small talk, showing interest and responding appropriately.

Meeting New People ESL Worksheet Overview
1. Lead-in Discussion
Students discuss where people commonly meet, the questions people ask when they first meet and which topics may be inappropriate. They also explore the meaning of small talk.
2. Listening Practice
Students learn useful vocabulary before listening to a conversation between two people meeting at a wedding reception. They answer comprehension questions and complete useful questions and expressions from the dialogue.
3. Reading Practice 1
Students read a meeting new people conversation set at a speed-dating event. They identify questions used to get to know someone, discuss vocabulary in context and complete a matching exercise before personalising some of the language.
4 Practice 2
In this meeting new people dialogue PDF, students complete a conversation between two travellers at a hostel in Hanoi. They use context to choose the correct questions and expressions before reading the completed dialogue aloud with a partner.
5. Useful Language and Dialogue Creation
Students study practical language for starting a conversation, keeping it going, asking about someone, showing interest and ending a conversation. They then create and perform a dialogue based on one of four realistic situations.
6. Optional Teacher-Copy Activities
The Teacher’s Copy includes a set of common get to know you questions for an additional speaking activity. Teachers can print one set of question cards for each group of 2–4 students or provide every student with a complete question sheet. An optional Vocabulary Recall Race is also included for revision, homework or fast finishers.
