In this lesson, students explore idioms for the New Year such as kick the habit, turn over a new leaf, hit the ground running, get the ball rolling, and out with the old, in with the new. Each idiom is presented in context to support comprehension and natural usage.
Students begin by reading example sentences and using context to infer the meaning of each expression. They then complete a matching task to check their understanding of the idioms and definitions. In the final stage of the lesson, learners write short mini dialogues using the New Year expressions, allowing them to personalise the language and practise it in a communicative way.
This New Year idioms lesson works well as a focused ESL vocabulary lesson in January, as part of a New Year-themed unit, or as a follow-up to speaking or discussion activities. It provides structured practice while still encouraging meaningful communication.
