This Valentine’s Day speaking activity is designed to help  ESL learners develop fluency and confidence when talking about Valentine’s Day.

This lesson comes with:

Fillable Fields – This worksheet can be completed digitally or printed.

Teacher’s Copy – Includes detailed teacher’s notes and an answer key.

Student Version – Perfect for sharing via email for online lessons.

This is most suited to B1-C1 level students.

45 mins +

Students take turns choosing a question and asking another student in their group. The responding student should aim to speak for at least one minute, encouraging longer answers, natural language use, and meaningful interaction. This format works well for pairwork or small groups and ensures that all students get plenty of speaking time.

After the speaking task, students complete a creative follow-up activity where they write their own Valentine’s poem, using ideas and language from the discussion. This provides a reflective extension to the speaking practice and allows learners to personalise the topic.

This activity is low-prep, flexible, and easy to adapt, making it suitable for both in-person and online lessons. It works well as a standalone speaking lesson or as a lighter, communicative activity during the Valentine’s period.

This Valentine’s Day speaking activity offers a simple, effective way to get students talking, sharing ideas, and building confidence in spoken English.
