Second Conditional Activity
somdn_product_pageThis free second conditional activity helps your A2–B1 learners build fluency with if … would … sentences while speaking about fun, imaginary situations.
Teaching the second conditional can sometimes feel abstract for learners. They understand the grammar rules, but they need practice using it in real communication. This ready-made activity provides a simple yet effective way for students to use the structure in natural conversation.
Instead of drilling isolated sentences, your learners will ask and answer second conditional questions, share ideas, and compare their classmates’ answers. It’s an ideal follow-up to a grammar presentation or as a stand-alone speaking task when you want a lively activity to reinforce the second conditional.
This lesson comes with:
Fillable Fields – This worksheet can be completed digitally or printed.
Teacher’s Copy – Includes detailed teacher’s notes.
Student Version – Perfect for sharing via email for online lessons.
This is most suited to A2+/B1 level students, but can be used at B2 level as revision.

What Students Will Practise
- Forming if-clauses with the past simple and would + verb
- Asking and answering second conditional questions in a communicative way
- Talking about imaginary and hypothetical situations
- Listening to and responding to their classmates’ ideas
How to Use It
- Hand out (or share digitally) the student worksheet with prompts.
- Students walk around the class (or move to breakout rooms online) to ask and answer the questions.
- Each response should be given in the second conditional (e.g. If I had a million euros, I’d travel the world).
- Students record their classmates’ answers on the worksheet.
- Wrap up with whole-class feedback: discuss unusual, funny, or surprising answers to encourage further speaking.
This format works particularly well as a “Find Someone Who …” task — always a favourite with students because it’s active, interactive, and naturally creates plenty of speaking opportunities.
