ESL Conversation Questions for B1+–C1 Students
These ESL conversation questions for adults and teens cover a range of engaging topics, from success and society to personal experiences, beliefs and goals. The activity can also be used as a set of advanced English conversation questions with higher-level learners looking to develop longer, more detailed responses.
1. Prepare
Students read through the 21 questions, highlight any unfamiliar language and choose eight questions they would be comfortable answering. They then make brief notes of keywords and ideas to help them prepare their responses.
2. Discuss
In pairs or small groups, students take turns answering their chosen ESL discussion questions and asking follow-up questions. They aim to speak for at least one minute about each question, giving them plenty of opportunity to develop fluency and expand their answers. The more challenging questions also work well as C1 conversation questions for advanced learners.
3. Report Back
Students work with a new partner and report what they learned during their original group discussion, providing further speaking practice.
Skills Developed
Speaking fluency, expressing and developing ideas, active listening, asking follow-up questions and reporting information.
Lesson Objectives
By the end of the activity, students will have practised discussing a range of interesting topics, giving extended answers and responding naturally to other speakers.
